Pop Art

    Pop art nowadays is widely regarded as the most significant movement since the mid 1940’s. The term was invented by British curator Lawrence Alloway in 1955, the Pop in Pop art is short for Popular as the movement was characterized by Popular Culture.

    An influential designer in Pop art was Verner Ponton. He was born in Denmark and studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He graduated from the university back in 1951. He was then began an internship with Arne Jacobsen and was appointed to assist the master on the iconic Ant Chair. Ponton was first established with his geometric and colorful designs. A great example of his work is the Panton chair.       

Another popular Pop art designer is Andy Warhol. He was born in the year 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Warhol was successful in magazine and ad illustrator. He looked into a lot of different types of arts such as "performance art, film making, video instillations and writing"

Some of Warhol’s works consist of the Campbell’s soup cans which consists of thirty two canvases, this artwork was a very influential painting as it led to pop art which became very popular in America.

 

Fashion:

Pop art is very influential with fashion as they both go hand in hand. This type of fashion was inspired mostly from advertisements and bold colors. One of the pioneers  of Pop Art  Richard Hamilton describes the style as :”popular,transient,expandable,low cost, mass produced, young , witty ,sexy , gimmicky , glamorous , big business.” All the qualities that pop art shared with consumerist culture and fashion industry as its main features. Andy Warhol  was the first major Pop icon that became very influential in todays fashion world.  Another  big inspiration for designers instead of Warhol  was Roy Lichtenstein.
